Princess Mary’s son rescued from Mermaid Beach surf

By Kathryn Smith

A GOLD Coast lifeguard has earned the gratitude of the Danish royal family and emerged a hero after rescuing Princess Mary’s eldest son from a rip during their Queensland getaway.

Prince Christian, 10, was dragged from the surf at Mermaid Beach on Thursday by lifeguard Nick Malcolm after a hair-raising moment in the popular Gold Coast waters.

The royals, who have been shopping and visiting local theme parks during their Queensland visit, were reportedly swimming between the flags.

Witnesses told how Mr Malcolm paddled out and brought the young prince back to his distressed parents, Australian-born Princess Mary, 43, and her 47-year-old husband, Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark.

Prince Frederik reportedly personally thanked the lifeguard, whose colleagues last night hailed him a hero, saying his quick actions almost certainly saved the heir to the Danish crown’s life.

Mr Malcolm has kept a low profile since the incident, but his supervisor heaped praise on him.
